Few cities are as easy to fall for as Amsterdam. Its 17th-century canals, tall gabled houses and the constant whirr of bicycles set an unhurried rhythm that begs you to wander. Between the Rijksmuseum and a brown café in the Jordaan, this guide helps you decide what to see, when to come and which neighbourhood to call home.
The destination's essentials, hand-picked to spark your trip.
The three great Golden Age canals — Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht — form a half-moon that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk them or glide through by boat to make sense of the whole city.
The grand national museum spans centuries of Dutch art, with Rembrandt’s “The Night Watch” and several Vermeer masterpieces as its headline works. Its library and gardens deserve time of their own.
In this house on the Prinsengracht, Anne Frank hid and wrote her diary during the Nazi occupation. The visit is sober and deeply moving — one of the experiences travellers remember most.
Amsterdam’s green heart is where the city gathers: cyclists, picnics, buskers and skaters fill its lawns and ponds. In summer it hosts an open-air theatre among the trees.
At the city’s most famous street market you can try fresh-pressed stroopwafels, raw herring with onion and bitterballen. The old brown cafés round off the local food experience.
In Amsterdam the bike rules: there are more bicycles than people and a lane network that reaches everywhere. Renting one and pedalling along the canals is the most authentic way to get around.
Amsterdam rewards a visit all year, but it changes a lot with the seasons. Spring and summer bring light and terrace life; autumn and winter offer a cosier city with shorter museum queues.
The favourite season for many: tulips bloom in the surrounding fields and at the Keukenhof gardens, the weather turns mild and the city wakes up. On 27 April, King’s Day paints everything orange and fills the canals with celebration.
Long days, packed terraces and life on the water. It is the liveliest and also the busiest and priciest season, so book well ahead. The weather is pleasant, though a sudden shower is never far away.
Crowds thin out and golden light suits the canals beautifully. It is a great time for the museums and for taking refuge in a brown café when the rain sets in. Pack warm layers and an umbrella.
Cold, short days and a cosy mood. The city glows during the Amsterdam Light Festival and, in the coldest years, a canal may even freeze over. There are fewer tourists and prices tend to dip outside the holidays.
The neighbourhoods and areas with the most charm to stay in.
The historic core around Central Station, Dam Square and the great canals. It is the most central and picture-perfect base for first-timers, though also the busiest and most expensive.
A former working-class district turned local favourite: narrow lanes, galleries, characterful shops and brown cafés. Quiet and romantic — ideal for those chasing the most postcard-like Amsterdam.
Young, multicultural and buzzing around the Albert Cuyp Market. It packs in restaurants and bars and sits close to the centre. Perfect for foodies and anyone who wants atmosphere on the doorstep.
Elegant and calm, around Vondelpark and Museum Square. Home to the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh, stately streets and good shopping. A comfortable choice for families and travellers who want peace and quiet.
Across the IJ river, a short hop on the free ferry from Central Station. This is the city’s most creative side, with converted shipyards, the A'DAM tower and rates that tend to be a little gentler.
Our selection: rating, location and that special something.
The small details that make travelling easier.
The centre is walkable and GVB trams, the metro and buses cover the rest. You can tap a contactless card straight onto the reader as you board; check tourist passes on the official transport website.
Cyclists have priority and move fast: never walk in the red bike lane or stop in it for photos. Always look both ways before crossing, even on the smallest streets.
The climate is changeable and rain can fall in any season, with wind off the North Sea. Bring layers, comfortable shoes and a light waterproof; a sturdy umbrella beats a flimsy one in the gusts.
Almost everything is paid by card or phone, and many shops, museums and cafés no longer take cash. Carry an international contactless card and a little change just in case at small stalls.
The Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh Museum run on timed entry and sell out days or weeks ahead. Buy on their official websites as soon as you have dates to secure a slot.
Dutch is the official language, but English is spoken fluently almost everywhere. A “dank je wel” (thank you) always goes down well and breaks the ice with locals.
Glimpses of the destination to whet your appetite.
Three or four days cover the essentials without rushing: the major museums, a canal walk or cruise, and time to enjoy neighbourhoods like the Jordaan or De Pijp. If you want day trips to the tulips, the Zaanse Schans windmills or Utrecht, add a day or two.

We traveled to Egypt in November 2025, we took a promotion through a website unrelated to travelcare and, upon seeing that the hotel they assigned us was very far from the center, we requested a category change; the first time they told me it wasn't possible and a week later they themselves wrote to me again saying they had another operator, a bit more expensive but with more excursions and the hotel central in Cairo. At the airport GALAXIA picked us up, couldn't be better, while there were huge queues of monturista (thank goodness I didn't book with them); the person in charge from our company received us in a minibus and kept telling us things until we reached the cruise. The guide on the trip wasn't spectacular but the cruise NILE PARADISE and the RAMSES HILTON, the hotel in Cairo, no complaints and within what we expected! (You have to be realistic and know that you're going to EGYPT not to a 5-star in Dubai🤣) We would definitely do it again, above all grateful that it came from them to write to us about the change and make things easier for us since we were about to cancel when we just received the possibility. Thanks to the Galaxia team! Thanks Travelcare, an incredible trip!

Marc put the trip together, with transfers, accommodations and activities. Everything went great and, during the stay, he made sure everything turned out as we expected. A luxury to travel like this! Thanks!

Very good agency. The wholesaler cancelled our trip just days before it was supposed to start, and Travel Care offered us all the information and options we had, taking charge of finding a similar trip and handling all the arrangements in record time. We received magnificent attention from Faisal and were able to enjoy our trip. Very happy

Trip to Egypt, 4 nights on a Nile cruise (Luxor-Aswan), 3 nights in Cairo. Our first experience of this kind and in our view, everything was very well organized. Upon arrival at Luxor airport, Travel Care's staff welcomed us and took us to the boat, where our guide Wael (Guay to his friends) was waiting for us and explained the included and optional visits (we wished they had given us an approximate price for the optional visits before the trip). The itinerary was very comprehensive, with visits to different temples, pyramids, mosques, markets, the Nubian village and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Although on some days we had to wake up very early, it was worth it to find the less crowded places and avoid the hottest hours (we went in August and the heat is unavoidable). A highly recommended trip and the Travel Care's attention both before and during the trip was excellent.
Jesus S. Barriga Antonio

ANTONIO GARCIA MORENO
Booking our trip with Travel Care was a real pleasure because of their professionalism, attention, services, friendliness and permanent contact to resolve any question, etcetera. Recommendable 100%. Another thing is the tour operator that operates at the destination. In our case it was Egypt, and the truth is that everything went quite well, but with the odd downside here and there. But in the case at hand, Travel Care, they have been attentive at all times to our needs, responding to and attending to each of our questions at all times. Without a doubt, I would recommend Travel Care if what you're looking for is an organized getaway.
JORGE RODRIGUEZ
Always attentive and available. What you look for in this type of business where trust has to be key. Highly recommendable..
Patxi Hinojosa Luján
The experience with Travel Care has been very positive; the only thing left would be to polish a couple of details on the part of the Tour Operator in question. We were very satisfied with the trip made to Egypt.
Graciela Gutierrez

Hi, the trip very good, appropriate value for money, everything very well organized and the destination a wonder and safe. The boat a bit old but very tasty food and good service. In Cairo the hotel also very good but a bit far away, but after so many excursions it's good to rest. The local guide very nice but in a big hurry and a difference in the price of the excursions he offered compared to the group next to us; the guides should agree on the price because it makes you think he was giving himself a tip, but well, it's an unimportant detail, then he got less tip and that's it.
Virginia PEÑALVER
We've just returned from our trip to India, through the golden triangle and everything turned out perfect. Organization and coordination, hotels, restaurants, making the most of the time, free extra activities etc. A 10 to Travelcare! Recommended without a doubt!
